McLaren’s Formula E team is celebrating a significant milestone after securing the top spot in the teams’ standings for the first time, coinciding with their Formula 1 counterpart’s first constructors’ title in 26 years. Central to McLaren’s recent Formula E success is rookie driver Taylor Barnard, who achieved a remarkable feat during the season opener by becoming the youngest podium finisher in the series. Barnard, 20, was unexpectedly in third place at the end of the Sao Paulo E-Prix, despite starting the race near the back and receiving a penalty for overusing energy.

Barnard reflected on his achievement, admitting that he never expected to be on the podium, especially considering the challenging start to the race. However, the penalty worked in their favor, as it allowed both Barnard and teammate Sam Bird to save energy, which proved crucial during two red-flag restarts. Barnard described the team’s strategy and execution as “perfect,” which helped him climb through the ranks, although he noted that tire grip issues and temperature prevented him from advancing further to challenge for the win.

In the final laps, Barnard was closely behind race winner Mitch Evans and Antonio Felix da Costa, while Bird finished in fourth, securing McLaren’s best team result in its Formula E history. The teamwork and camaraderie between Barnard and Bird were evident, with Barnard highlighting Bird’s role as a mentor throughout his transition to full-time racing. Bird expressed his pride in Barnard’s performance, acknowledging the difficulty of the race and Barnard’s ability to fight among more experienced drivers.

While celebrating the podium, both drivers share a pragmatic approach, acknowledging that McLaren still has room for improvement. Bird pointed out areas for operational refinement, especially as they adapt to the new GEN3 car. Barnard agreed, noting that although the team’s powertrain is strong, they need to improve their qualifying pace and execution to stay competitive in future races.
