In an exclusive interview, Mario Andretti addressed the challenges and eventual success of Cadillac’s entry into Formula 1, shedding light on his family’s involvement and the factors leading to this milestone. Despite the Andretti name stepping aside, he expressed pride and optimism for the future, dismissing any lingering sadness over the transformation of Andretti Global into Cadillac’s F1 endeavor.
Earlier this week, Liberty Media announced its provisional agreement with General Motors, securing Cadillac’s place on the 2026 Formula 1 grid. This decision follows years of hurdles for Andretti’s previous F1 bids. Notably, Cadillac succeeded where Andretti’s standalone efforts fell short, largely due to a new plan emphasizing the long-term value of a works team rather than the initially proposed Andretti-Renault customer car program for 2025.
A pivotal change was Michael Andretti stepping back from day-to-day operations at Andretti Global, which some saw as key to improving F1’s perception of the project. Mario Andretti downplayed this aspect, stating, “There’s no big issues that I see among the group here that would linger… It’s not that simple. There were a lot of things going on, but it happened.”
While sources claim Michael’s reduced role wasn’t a specific F1 requirement, Mario acknowledged some “personal” dynamics might have influenced earlier rejections. Reflecting on the process, he admitted, “I don’t know if there’s one thing that all of a sudden brought the thing to fruition… There were so many things that were not totally clear.”
Cadillac’s acceptance represents a broader boost for F1 in the United States, a market hosting three Grand Prix races annually. Mario highlighted the appeal of a truly American F1 team and its potential to charm fans with a U.S. driver: “It’s all that. There’s a lot of work to be done… but that’s what makes it worthwhile.”
He also praised Cadillac’s plans to establish teams in F2 and F3, echoing Michael’s commitment to a ladder system that nurtures American talent. “It will be an opportunity for some young talents here from the States to enroll,” Mario noted, emphasizing the significance of creating pathways for emerging drivers.
Despite past challenges, the Andretti family’s involvement with Cadillac signals a bright and ambitious chapter for American motorsport on the global stage.
