Red Bull Racing has confirmed that Sergio Perez will not continue with the team in 2025, marking the end of his four-year stint with the team. This decision was not entirely unexpected, as reports had circulated after the conclusion of the 2024 season suggesting that Perez’s future with the team was uncertain. His place will be taken by Liam Lawson, who has been chosen over Yuki Tsunoda.
Perez expressed gratitude for his time with Red Bull, saying, “I’m incredibly grateful for the past four years with Oracle Red Bull Racing and for the opportunity to race with such an amazing team. Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience and I’ll always cherish the successes we achieved together.” Perez reflected on the milestones and record-breaking achievements during his tenure, including meeting many incredible people along the way.
The 2024 season was disappointing for Perez, especially in contrast to Max Verstappen’s continued dominance. While Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive world championship, Red Bull finished third in the constructors’ standings, trailing behind McLaren and Ferrari. Perez’s struggles were a major factor in the team’s lower-than-expected performance. Despite a strong start to the season, with four podium finishes in the first five races, Perez’s form deteriorated. He finished no higher than sixth after the opening six races and ended the season with just one point from the final five Grand Prix races, including two retirements.
Perez’s four-year tenure at Red Bull included five race wins and 29 podiums, with his best finish being second in the 2023 points standings behind Verstappen. Liam Lawson, who had a promising end to the 2024 season, was selected to replace him. Lawson had been filling in for Daniel Ricciardo in the last six races of the season, earning two ninth-place finishes. In contrast, Yuki Tsunoda, who has had a solid but less remarkable career at Red Bull, will return to the junior team in 2025, paired with Isack Hadjar.
