The 2024 Formula 1 season was one of the most thrilling and unpredictable in recent memory, packed with exciting races, surprising debuts, and unforgettable performances. Here are some of the standout statistics that defined the season.

Narrow Margins and Intense Races

One of the most thrilling moments of the year came at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen narrowly held off Lando Norris, with just a 0.725-second gap between them. This race highlighted the growing competitiveness in the sport, with other drivers, especially Norris, beginning to challenge Red Bull’s dominance. Norris’ performance followed his previous win in Miami, showing that the gap to Verstappen was closing. Another close finish was Oscar Piastri’s 0.647-second deficit to Lewis Hamilton in Belgium, underlining the increasing rivalry among top drivers.

A Shift in Dominance: Multiple Race Winners

Max Verstappen, who had dominated the previous year, was unable to replicate his 2023 run of 10 consecutive wins. In 2024, the maximum number of back-to-back wins was just two, achieved by Verstappen in Canada and Spain. This shift in race winners brought fresh excitement to the sport, as no driver managed to secure more than two consecutive victories in the latter half of the season.

New Faces: Rookie Debuts and Surprises

The 2024 season also saw several rookies make their debut. Franco Colapinto replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams and scored points in just his second race. Jack Doohan stepped in for Esteban Ocon, while Ollie Bearman had an unforgettable debut when he replaced Carlos Sainz at Ferrari, impressing with a point finish.

Diverse Race Winners and Hamilton’s Return to the Top

Seven different drivers won races in 2024, the most since 2012. Notably, McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri each won their first Grand Prix, with Norris securing four victories and Piastri two. Lewis Hamilton’s win at Silverstone was particularly significant, as it marked his first victory in 945 days, ending a long winless streak.

Tight Constructors’ Battle

The fight for the constructors’ title went down to the wire, with McLaren edging Ferrari by just 14 points to claim the championship. McLaren’s success, led by Norris and Piastri, was a standout achievement, marking their first constructors’ title since 1998. The season also saw strong performances from other teams like Alpine, with Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly pulling off a double podium in Sao Paulo, propelling Alpine to an unexpected rise in the standings.

Record-breaking moments and Astonishing Feats

The season was also marked by rare moments, such as the identical pole position lap times set by George Russell and Max Verstappen in Canada. This incredibly rare occurrence had not happened in F1 for 9,723 days, dating back to 1997. Additionally, Verstappen and Charles Leclerc produced impressive recovery drives, with Verstappen climbing from P16 to P1 in Sao Paulo and Leclerc charging from P19 to P3 in Abu Dhabi.

A Season for the Ages

The 2024 F1 season proved to be one of the most exciting and unpredictable in recent years. With multiple race winners, stunning performances, and a dramatic fight for both the constructors’ and drivers’ titles, it was a year that showcased the ever-evolving nature of Formula 1 racing.
