Rumors in motorsport are nothing new, particularly in F1 and MotoGP, where the speculation often runs wild. However, one persistent rumor about seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton potentially entering the MotoGP paddock might actually have some substance.
The speculation began when talks of F1 owner Liberty Media potentially acquiring MotoGP gained traction. With this, rumors surfaced about Hamilton potentially becoming involved in the MotoGP world, possibly as a team owner. Earlier in 2024, the possibility of Hamilton buying into Gresini Racing was mentioned, and more recently, he has been linked with a move to invest in the struggling Honda team, which has faced difficulties in recent seasons.
By the end of 2024, a new twist emerged, with KTM’s MotoGP boss, Pit Beirer, revealing that discussions with Hamilton’s management had taken place. Speaking to German motorsports outlet Speedweek, Beirer confirmed that Hamilton was seriously considering entering the MotoGP scene, with the possibility of owning his own team. Beirer also emphasized that KTM is open to talks with potential investors, including Hamilton. He further assured that KTM’s close relationship with Red Bull, a longstanding partner, had not been a barrier to these discussions, even with Hamilton’s association with Red Bull rival Monster Energy.
While the potential Liberty Media acquisition of MotoGP is still under investigation by the European Commission over antitrust concerns, the talks surrounding Hamilton’s involvement in the sport continue to evolve. If the deal goes through, it could pave the way for an F1-MotoGP doubleheader, which would be a spectacular addition to the motorsport calendar.
Although nothing is set in stone yet, the idea of Hamilton joining MotoGP feels increasingly plausible. Should he make the leap into the world of motorcycle racing, he wouldn’t be the first F1 champion to do so, as Kimi Raikkonen has already found success in MXGP. Only time will tell whether Hamilton’s interest in KTM results in a transformative partnership that could help the team rise to success.
