Lewis Hamilton faced a challenging qualifying session for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, his final race weekend with Mercedes after 12 successful seasons. The seven-time world champion was hit with a series of setbacks, culminating in an 18th-place qualifying finish after a dislodged bollard from Kevin Magnussen’s Haas impacted Hamilton’s car, costing him critical downforce during Q1. This unfortunate incident left Hamilton disappointed but reflective.

“You couldn’t have timed it more perfectly – that bollard,” he said. Despite the setback, Hamilton maintained optimism about Sunday’s race, adding, “I was really hopeful. I really thought that we had a chance at getting a podium. The car was feeling good, but it wasn’t meant to be.” Starting P16 due to grid penalties for other drivers, Hamilton remained determined to fight his way up the order, emphasizing his focus on enjoying the moment with his team.

Team principal Toto Wolff openly apologized for the team’s costly mistake in Q1, describing the decision not to send Hamilton out earlier as “inexcusable” and “idiotic.” Wolff lamented, “I just need to apologize to Lewis… We totally let him down. It doesn’t ruin all the legacy we have with him, but I can only say sorry.” Wolff attributed the misjudgment to a tactical error, which combined with the bollard incident, led to Hamilton’s premature exit from qualifying.

Meanwhile, George Russell, Hamilton’s teammate, secured seventh on the grid. However, he expressed confusion over Mercedes’ inconsistent performance, stating, “We are really scratching our heads because the car felt good initially, but since then, we’ve been half a second off the pace.” Russell attributed some of the struggles to the team experimenting with setups during practice sessions as they prepare for the 2025 season.

Despite a tough start to the weekend, Hamilton and Russell remain focused on maximizing their performances in Sunday’s race. Mercedes hopes to rebound from the missteps, while Hamilton aims to conclude his illustrious tenure with the team on a high note, showcasing the resilience and fighting spirit that have defined his career.
